A child prodigy and carrier of the nation’s first place title by age twelve, Mohannad Orabi’s audacious lines invoke both human emotion and build contrast layer upon layer. “Some of today’s greatest story-tellers are artists who convey their thoughts on canvas” he said, “in which colors, lines, symbols and technique are transformed into a single voice. The narrator’s revelations come through the thickness or the subtlety of paint”. With tangible subjects such as faces of loved ones or a child in utero inside a mother’s womb, Orabi’s search for the deep and the meaningful allow viewers to see his world beyond the human façade.
In his youth Orabi was sent to attend numerous workshops in Germany which would later contribute to his successful career. He took home an education, an experience, and an ambition which further led him to India where he won the silver medal for portraying his country. Brought up in an environment rich with art, he experimented and found his forte with a pallet and a brush.
A graduate from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, Orabi pursued a Masters degree in oil painting and continued to enter competitions at popular venues such as:
"Young Artists" Exhibition – Damascus, Syria in 2006 where he received the first prize.
Ebla Cham Hotel-Damascus, Syria where he received 2nd prize.
"Damascus Colors" Competition at Mustafa Ali Gallery– Damascus, Syria in 2004 where he received 3rd prize.
Silver medal in Shankar's International Children Competition-India in 1991.
Other exhibition debuts included:
Ishtar Gallery-Damascus in 2006, Emirates Palace-Abu Dhabi in 2007, and "The First Ayyam Prize for Emerging Syrian Artists" at Ayyam Gallery-Damascus in 2007 and his most recent exhibition is in Jordan’s Zara Gallery on July 9th, 2007.
Despite his success, Mohannad Orabi’s accomplishments haven’t trimmed down his love for children for he still works closely with them and is an anchor of a children’s program on Syrian television. He strives to encourage and empower kids to pursue a passion and an understanding of art.
